Colorado, Chicago Trade Players
Tuesday, October 28th, 2003
According to BNN there were mixed emotions by the players involved in the trade between the Colorado Rockies and the Chicago Cubs. As part of the deal, the Rockies swapped 34-year-old reliever Bob Wickman and a 4th round draft pick to the Cubs getting nothing in return. The players indicated it was good to get a fresh new start in another city, but it was difficult to leave your friends on the old team.

In his career Wickman has racked up 43 wins, 30 losses and 39 saves. His lifetime ERA is 3.20 in 651.2 innings over 713 games.
Legends Welcome Viola to HOF
Tuesday, October 28th, 2003
What a way to cap a glorious career -- get elected to the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. That's exactly what happened to pitching star, Frank Viola. The Baseball Writers Association rewarded him for his sensational seasons on the mound and today he took his place among the baseball immortals.

Viola told the audience at the ceremonies, "Baseball has been my life ... and what a wonderful life it has been. The truth is I would have played it for almost nothing -- but I wouldn't have told any of the owners that."

Viola had a career record of 204 victories and 174 losses with 2304 strikeouts in 3456.1 innings and a 3.77 ERA. He was 43 when he retired from baseball, and he appeared in 529 games.
Kent Hrbek Enters Hall Of Fame
Tuesday, October 28th, 2003
How do you get to the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame?
Just hit 500 homers, get 3000 hits, win 300 games or perhaps just save 300 games. Not an easy task, is it? But occasionally it does happen -- it happened to the gifted first baseman Kent Hrbek, who recently retired at the age of 43.

Kent Hrbek was recently inducted into the coveted shrine of hardball heroes by the Baseball Writers Association. Hrbek was always a favorite of the beat writers -- always quick with a quip and always willing to talk about the game -- but that's not why he got elected to the Hall of Fame. Hrbek played a pretty good brand of baseball, too. He played in 2215 games, had 2270 hits, 483 home runs, 1642 RBIs and scored 1332 runs while batting .276 in his career.

Reminiscing about his life in baseball, Hrbek said it all began by hitting grand slam homers in the last of the ninth in his backyard and ended up in the Hall of Fame. "It was quite a trip. I can't believe they pay us money to play a kid's game. Thank goodness, I was good at it. I only got a high school education and I had to cheat to get that. Who knows what I would have done without baseball? I was just a poor old country boy. For the longest time I even thought the last words of the national anthem were 'play ball.'"
